Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty (eyelid plasty) is a plastic operation aimed at removing or
repositioning the orbital fat hernias with further removal of abundant skin (and muscles if necessary)
in the lower and upper eyelid areas.
Periocular area divided into the upper and lower eyelid areas is the first to suffer from the ageing
process, and, as a rule, starts attracting attention since the age of 22-25. Frequently, the
“edema” in the lower eyelid area due to a congenital weakness of the musculofascial complex
manifesting itself as contouring of the fat “hernias” in the form of bags under one’s
eyes, may appear at the age of 16 -18.
Operation on the eyelids may be performed either independently (upper or lower blepharoplasty) or in
combination (quadrilateral blepharoplasty). Also it may be performed both independently and together with
other face rejuvenating operations.
A scar, as a rule, is highly cosmetic and is camouflaged in the natural eyelid fold. Taking into account
the variety of eyelid cosmetic defects, it is possible to use various surgical methods that will be
discussed with you during your consultation with a surgeon. So, the lower blepharoplasty may be performed
through several approaches. When using the most common approach, blepharoplastic incision is made about
2-3mm away from the ciliary boundary, in the skin fold. In individual cases, at the young age in
particular, or when the fat hernias alone are the basic problem, the transconjunctival approach (without
skin incisions) may be used.
Should you decide to undergo a plastic operation the Medical Club surgeons will give you a primary
consultation. After talking to you and giving you the relevant examination, a doctor will set forth his
(her) judgment as to whether it is possible to considerably improve your eyelid area surgically with high
reliability and minimal risks. Any aesthetic surgery involves a certain trade-off. Our specialists will
clearly define this trade-off for you and will answer all the questions that may arise.
- In the “Medical Club” clinic the eyelid plasty is performed under a general anesthesia
(narcosis).
- The duration of operation will depend on its volume, and an operation itself will last from 20 minutes
to 1 hour.
- Your stay at the clinic will be a day long, on the average. In some cases you may leave the clinic on
the day of operation.
- Immediately after the operation a “Steri-Strip” plasterer will be applied to your eyelid
area and will remain in place within 2-3 days.
- Sutures are removed at 3-5 postoperative day.
- Approximately in 7-10 days you will be able to resume your usual life.
- You are not recommended to attend sauna and solarium within a month.
- At the early postoperative period a physician-rehabilitator will make up and conduct your personal
rehabilitation program, which will shorten your recovery period and improve surgical result.
- An ultimate result of operation may be assessed in 1-2 months.
