Correction of auricles

Correction of auricles (otoplasty) may be either aesthetic or reconstructive. The former changes not only the auricular shape but also brings the auricle closer to the retroauricular area to form a normal angle between them, while the latter is to solve a more complex task – to create the absent auricle completely or partially.

The otoplasty to correct the shape of prominent ears should be started since the age of 6. After eliminating the prominence, the ears develop harmonically in parallel with a child’s growth.

Otoplasty leaves no conspicuous traces. Incisions extend along the posterior auricular surface and are absolutely invisible. The up-to-date otoplastic techniques make it possible to model the cartilaginous tissue thereby forming the natural auricular shape.

There exists a multitude of techniques to correct prominent auricles but the most popular among them are:

• The cartilaginous technique, where a cartilage is separated from the skin through an incision on the opposite side of the ear, and special scores are made to give it the desired shape. If necessary, the cartilaginous fragment is removed from the auricle to make it less deep.
• The second, less traumatic technique is Mustradi’s suturing technique, where a cartilage is not resected, and an auricular shape is formed via placing special П-shaped silk sutures on the auricular cartilage. After the new auricular shape has been formed, the incision on the opposite side of the ear is sutured, and a modeling supportive dressing is applied to hold the ear in the desired position during healing.

The choice of technique will depend on the condition of your auricular anatomic structures and their projection.

• In the Medical Club clinic otoplasty is performed under a general anesthesia (narcosis). The duration of operation will depend on its volume, and an operation itself will last from 40 minutes to 2 hours.
• Your stay at the clinic will be a day long, on the average. Immediately after the operation an elastic compressive dressing will be applied to your auricular area and will remain in place for 2 days.
• During the next 3-4 weeks we recommend you to wear a special compressive bandage to protect your auricles.
• In about 4-5 days you will be able to resume your usual life.
• Sutures are removed at 10-12 postoperative day.
• During a month you are not recommended to attend sauna and solarium and do active sports.
• An ultimate result of operation may be assessed in 2-3 months.
