Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty (nasal plasty) is a surgical correction of the nose shape via
changing its bone-cartilaginous structure. Nasal plasty is intended to correct physical defects (e.g.
nose hump or collapse of its dorsum, nose deviation both in its bone and cartilaginous parts, excessive
nose height or width) or restore impaired breathing function, e.g. after traumas or chronic inflammatory
diseases.
Nose is one of the most conspicuous and prominent elements of a human face. Its look, together with other
facial features, largely impacts your appearance. Moreover, the nose performs a number of essential
functions: it is due to the nose that the air for breathing is supplied and the air flow conditioning is
controlled before it reaches the lungs. The olfaction function is also performed by the nose.
Evident nasal flaws are frequent but not always associated with internal defects leading to the airway
obstruction. Nasal defects may become the result of previous nasal trauma, heredity or other causes.
Structurally, the external nose may be presented as a triangle, if viewed when the head is deflected
backwards. Lateral nasal walls form the external edges of a tripod, and the septum (dividing the nose into
two parts internally) is its central support. When the nose is broken or injured, the fissures are very
frequently formed in both external walls of the tripod (nasal bones) and in its central internal support
(nasal septum). When the septum is deviated, fractured or otherwise injured, this may lead to the
obstruction of nasal airways running between the tripod edges. To properly straighten the septum
surgically, it is, as a rule, necessary to correct both internal and external parts of the nose.
This plastic operation, among many others, is aimed at improving the nose appearance and is called
rhinoplasty. The purpose of operations in this field is to improve those specific features of the nose
that distort facial appearance, and obtain more harmonic aesthetic agreement between the nose and other
facial elements. In its structure, the nose is an extremely complex organ. Each human nose is unique in
its way. Its aesthetic contribution in facial appearance is tremendous both in good and bad senses. Due to
the unique structure and look of your nose, it necessary during rhinoplastic operation, probably more than
in any other operation on sensory organs, to admit and respect the individuality of nasal structural
elements ant their harmony with other facial features. When making up the plan of your operation, we will
always try to preserve all “positive” peculiarities characterizing your appearance. It will be
absolutely illogical to picture in our imagination an “ideal nose” and try to embody this
image on your face. This approach ignores such an essential moment as the agreement of your nose with your
face, and will for sure lead to result “not becoming your face”. To change specific undesired
features of your nose for achieving its more harmonious agreement with the rest of your facial features is
the goal that we pursue during rhinoplastic operation.
Moreover, ignoring these principles will for sure result in that your nose will be
“overcorrected” and will have the “overcorrected” appearance. Perhaps, in no other
operation on sensory organs the principle of conservatism is not of so much importance as in rhinoplastic
operation. With this aim in mind, we will give you time necessary to discuss those peculiarities of your
nose which you consider undesired, and will discuss with you the safe method of correcting them to avoid
the “corrected” or “operated” appearance frequently seen after rhinoplastic
surgery.
Rhinoplastic technique will depend on the tasks posed before a surgeon and conditions available. The
essence of every rhinoplasty is to correct the bone and cartilaginous structures forming nasal framework.
There exist two rhinoplastic techniques: with external incision in the septal skin (“open”
rhinoplasty) and with the use of intranasal incisions alone (“closed” method). In a
“closed” method one incision is made inside each nostril. The incisions are inconspicuous
externally and in some time they are difficult to notice even during medical examination. An
“open” rhinoplasty leaves a scar on the septal skin, which is usually seen just slightly.
Besides, additional incisions are sometimes made at the nostril base. Scars after these incisions are, as
a rule, almost inconspicuous. Both methods enable good results to be obtained.
After talking to you and giving you the relevant examination, we will do all depending on us to precisely
and clearly present you our judgment as to the possibility to improve surgically those facial features
that give you trouble, and make this with high reliability and minimal risks. Any cosmetic operation
involves a certain trade-off. We will try to clearly define it for you and answer all the questions that
may arise.
All operations pursuing the objective to change nasal shape are performed under a general anesthesia
– narcosis. After your examination and selection of the surgical technique, we will make a decision
regarding the type of anesthesia. You will feel no pain and will not remember what was happening to you
during operation.
After your discharge from the clinic you will be given clear recommendations.
Rhinoplasty may become a remarkable event both for you and a surgeon. To achieve the desired results, it
is necessary to have full mutual understanding and awareness as to a patient’s wishes and surgical
prospects to be determined in accordance with specific individual features of your nose structure.
During consultation we will provide you with additional, more detailed information concerning all the
issues contained in this informational brochure.
