Contour and reduction mammoplasty
Mastaptosis is a natural process that women’s breasts are subjected to throughout her life.
The presence of mastaptosis is usually starts to be identified when the nipple level becomes lower than
that of the submammary fold.
Mastopexy (mammal gland lifting or contour mammoplasty) is a surgical
intervention aimed at improving the mammal gland appearance via its elevation and reshaping. Mastopexy
is based on the correction of areolar diameter and movement of the nipple – areaola complex to the
upper position.
Reduction mammoplasty is an operation to correct the mass and shape of the mammal glands in the
case of their ptosis. The operation is indicated in the presence of variously pronounced mastoptosis and
when it is necessary to reduce the mass of mammal glands.
With regard for an important role of mammal glands in aesthetics and sexual sphere, mammoplasty is
frequently remains to be a desirable operation for many women.
Today the two mammoplasty techniques are the most popular and give the most aesthetic result.
The first (“periareolar”) technique is used in a minor (grade 1-2) mastoptosis and does not
involve reshaping. In this technique a scar in the form of a ring is located around the areola only. This
technique is less traumatic, requires less time for performing and postoperative healing, but merely
improves the existing mammal gland shape without making it ideal. To create an ideal breast shape, this
operation may be combined with simultaneous prosthetics.
The second technique (“reduction mammoplasty”) is the most common in plastic surgery and is
performed in the form of an “anchor”. It is used in considerable (grade 3-4) mammoptosis to
degrease (reduce) the mass of breasts. Basic principles of this operation are: repositioning of the nipple
- areola complex on the skin pedicle flap superiorly, reduction (mass decrease) of the interior skin and
gland segments, repositioning of the external and internal skin segments to the inferior-central area. To
hold the newly formed breasts in the desired position, the internal (absorbable within 3 months) and
external (intracutaneous) silk sutures are placed. This results in forming an anchor-shaped cosmetic scar
around the areola: vertically inferiorly in the submammary fold.
